Shares slump more than 5%

The London stock market hit a five-year trough Monday as the market continued to digest news that the economy was on the brink of recession after negative growth in the third quarter.

In morning deals, London's FTSE 100 index of top shares plunged 5.62 percent to 3,665.21 points, striking a level last seen on April 1, 2003.

On Friday, the FTSE had shed five percent following news that the economy shrank by 0.5 percent in the third quarter of 2008 -- the first quarterly contraction for 16 years.
